Founded in 1872 and situated some 50km west of Christchurch, the Greendale community area has changed in recent years as lifestyle blocks and a diversity of semi-rural occupations have become more prevalent. In spite of this the school still retains its very strong rural identity.
Greendale is a small rural school of 29 pupils and 2.54 teachers. The ethnic composition has in the past been mostly NZ Pakeha / European (7% Maori). In May 2003 the school roll was 20, in 2006 it peaked at 42 and as at 17 March 2008 it was 29
Greendale, students are generally very well behaved and the school still has an innocence, lost to many schools today. Furthermore, the school community (parents, friends, ex-pupils and others), continue to be very supportive of, and actively involved in many school activities.
In 2007-2009 school buildings were substantially upgraded. New office space was added, the existing library demolished and new larger library/information cenbtre was built. There were a number of internal changes : new disabled toilet, cloak bay, foyer area, cleaner spaces, wet area in Room 2 to replace that lost with library rebuild. In addition the school received (1) new carpet and vinyl throughout, (2) as well as exterior work including new roofing and associated repaint as well as landscaping.
In 2006 2007 Enrolment Zones were established with most neighbouring schools. To date, Greendale BOT has not been required to establishe a school zone although for all intents and purposes, a zone now exists by virtue of the fact that bus routes historically serve particular areas.
