We are students of a tiny school in the centre of Wellington City - we have 24 students from 5 years old to 12 years old. We are one of only two Jewish schools in New Zealand.

We started learning about the Holocaust in May 2008.  So far we have learnt about rights and discrimination, talked to a survivor and studied memorials around the world.  We learnt that six million jewish people died, and 1.5 million of them were children. We decided to collect buttons to see just how big that number is.  1.5 million really is a lot! We have been collecting for two and a half years  and we now have 1.5 million buttons.   We have also just finished our very own Wikispaces with videos we made about what we've learnt on this project.  We worked with Capital E, in Wellington, and did everything from writing the scripts, to filming, to editing and creatiing music all by ourselves.

We are so glad that we were successful in getting all the buttons.  Thank you so much to everyone who helped us.  We even have more than we need, so we will be helping other schools that are doing similar projects.

It's not too late to join our project and help out.  The next part of our project is to raise money to build a memorial sculpture to house the buttons. This will be for everyone in Wellington to visit.  We think it is important for people to remember the children and learn from the Holocaust so that it won't happen again.
