About Midlands

What Is Midlands

Midlands Hockey Inc holds one of eight regional hockey franchises sanctioned by Hockey New Zealand.  Incorporating the Bay of Plenty, Counties Manukau, Tauranga, Thames Valley and Waikato Hockey Associations, Midlands Hockey is responsible for selecting, developing and supporting the Men’s and Women’s National Hockey League (NHL), Under 21 teams and Under 18 teams as they compete in national tournaments each year.

In addition to our teams’ inclusion at National Tournaments, a major component of Midlands Hockey is the delivery of its Talent Development  Programme that identifies and develops players, coaches and administrators from within the region – giving them the capability to achieve National honours.

2012 saw a significant expansion of Midlands Hockey’s role in delivering hockey across the region.  At the March 2012 Annual General Meeting, our five stakeholder Associations voted an amendment to the Constitution which gave Midlands Hockey the mandate to take on the overall responsibility for “growing and developing” the game at all levels throughout the region

In playing numbers, this means Midlands Hockey will support more than 9,000 hockey players and in doing so, the Associations, clubs and schools that these players are attached to.
