Maths
Mathematics plays a major part in the teaching at Naenae Primary School. As with many other schools across New Zealand, Naenae Primary bases its maths programme on the nationwide Numeracy project (NUMPA). Every Term classrooms at Naenae are exposed to various types of maths. One Term it could be addition/subtraction and geometry, and the following Term measurement and multiplication/division.
Our school ensures that we cover all of the math strands thoroughly every year, so that we are able to build on our students’ prior knowledge from previous learning, and help the learners to progress forward and meet their next learning step. The children are all monitored regularly, and grouped according to the strategies they use to solve problems.
Maths lessons consist of a ‘teaching and learning ’ time with the teacher, and then an ‘activity ’ section to put into practice what has been taught. The next block is ‘knowledge ’, where the children are able to apply their learning by playing games with a peer.
The results over the past three years have dramatically increased across all of the demographic groups. This shows the value of ‘The Numeracy Project’ in our school
